I needed to replace a retractable box cutter that I lost, so today I went to the corner hardware store to buy one and was asked to present I.D., which the cashier actually inspected before selling to me. I was so surprised by this!

Is this a rule across the city, or just in certain areas?

I don't think there's a law requiring it, it's most likely at the discretion of the clerk

Good thing you didn't also need a box of nails and a pressure cooker, too!

I guess you were carded to see if you were over 18. This is a really old article so I'm not sure if this law is still in place, but apparently in 1995 a city law was passed to making it illegal for students to carry box cutters and banning their sale to anyone under 18 years old.

Maybe because of all the slashings going on the clerk decided to ask customers for I.D. when they purchase any type of blade.

That law about ID for box cutters long predates the current slashing spree. Cannot recall what prompted it but goes along with that about selling cans of spray paint to minors as well.

Did the clerk write your name down? If not it must be just to check your age. There are other things that can't be bought by minors. Once I went to the self checkout lane at a supermarket with a long Bic lighter and it wouldn't be allowed until a clerk verified I wasn't a minor.

Thanks for coming through with the answers, Henna!

@ Marinjsxx I'm currently heavily pregnant and ...let's just say mature, so I guess the clerk was being super diligent, afraid of some kind of sting, or pregnancy hormones are doing wonders for my skin!
