If you are cited for windshield tint (or any other safety equipment ticket), can the officer not allow you to go through the tunnel because your vehicle is considered a safety hazard?
I was cited for windshield tint (not complaining about that, I know its illegal) before coming into the midtown tunnel toll booth from the Queens side. The officer said that I am not allowed to use the tunnel because its a safety hazard. The officer made me take the last exit out and I had to take the 59th st bridge back to Manhattan.
That made no sense to me as I have been cited plenty of times before for this and never had that happen. I think the cop was busting em.
Anyone have any knowledge on that just for my curiosity? I seriously cant believe that because of tint I wouldnt be able to use the tunnel. So from his point of view, if I am cited for a broken headlight, which is a safety issue, I cant go through the tunnel? Lol
Again, I am not complaining about getting the ticket, for which I know he has every right to give me every day of the week if he wants, I just would like someone to shed some light on this issue of not being allowed to use the tunnel. lol
Never heard of not being allowed on the bridge over tint, for that matter, heavily tinted side windows shouldn't be allowed on the bridge or tunnels.
I used to have a tinted windshield about 10 years ago, horrible idea, really hard to see especially in bad weather and blind spots.
Also, if you get into a fender bender and it's stated you have your windshield tinted, your insurance can legally deny you any coverage for the accident.
You'll prob need to call the department and try to find out by phone if what the officer did is legal in terms of not allowying you to cross the bridge.

Its actually not terrible. I really do have a sensitivity to bright lights and for that reason I have it. Any bright light or sun, I start tearing. I am always wearing sunglasses. Sucks but what can I do? I have had tints on my windshield since I started driving. Its a 70% crystalline 3m tint, so its not dark. I have applied for the permit but NYS says I need to have some sort of skin condition and provide pathology results.
And I know about the insurance thing, been well aware of that for a long time but I cant drive without tint.
Anyways, thanks for that advice, guess I will have to call about that.
If you're coming from Queens, your question has nothing to do with the Port Authority, which only owns the four bridges and two tunnels connecting NJ to NYC.

Ma'am the port authority runs the Midtown Tunnel as well lol
A tinted windshield is dangerous and it obstructs your vision. Just like having crap dangling off your rear view mirror. In a dark tunnel you will have very limited visibility. I can see why the officer ticketed you for the safety violation. A tunnel fire from a car accident is no joke.
Perhaps you should go 20% on the rear and sides, peel off your windshield banner and this will actually cut down significantly on any UV light entering your car from the windshield. Keeping in mind that any tint on the front driver and passenger windows is still illegal, but most times you wont be bothered for it it the shade matches the rears like on an SUV.
Also if your tint job looks like crap or doesn't look OEM, you are a target for the cops. Buy pre cut pieces, for your exact model of vehicle.

I am not wanting a lecture on the law or how its dangerous. I know its illegal. I said that in my original post.
I am not complaining about being ticketed.
All I want to know is that is it allowed for him to not let me go through the tunnel bc he ticketed me for this.
And for the side windows 70 percent is the law and if he wanted to be technical, anything below that could also be a safety violation, so could he not let me go through the tunnel for the side windows either?
And my tint doesnt look like crap. lol. I paid a lot for the 2015 SRT I purchased just last yr. Tint was done correctly, trust me. lol

He was a port authority cop.
No he wasn't.
The Port Authority only controls crossing which connect New Jersey and New York.
