They suspended the test last year but prior to that I never understood why the NYPD would hold tests 5 days a week. That made no sense. It was almost like asking for a massive backlog of tests.

Not enough applicants.

Other city test draw crowds of 30-100k people so they have enough of a list for 4 years. These agencies also typically hire much less than NYPD due to size. For example DSNY only has about 5k San workers, with about 100 people per hiring class... Nypd ranks about 34,000 officers, and their hiring classes are close to 1000 people per hiring class.

Typically the Nypd tests only yields about 1,000 passing applicant of which about half fail the hiring process due to background , failed drug tests, failed medical etc.... So to fill one class they would use multiple tests.

At least that's my personal interpretation of why they did it that way.... But just an educated guess

True, mikfleye3. I would like to add that people end up taking the exam multiple times in hopes of scoring higher on the next exam. Little do they know that the exam number goes in order and then by who got the highest numbers. People who take exam three times are just wasting their money or better yet giving the city their money but everything goes in order when it comes to NYC civil service. They were truly backlogged and they were still hiring from older exams which probably expired now. They are going to give the Nypd PO exam in October, I believe. But you know, that is always subject to change...
