I just read this, described as an "old joke" - but I've never heard it before, and was chuckling.

Q: Why do New Yorkers wear so much black?
A: Because they can't find anything darker.

Black goes with anything. Strong color and does have a slimming effect. Also Good guys wear black. Chuck Norris said so back in 1978.

Lots of arts. Musicians, theater people, artists all wear black.

I look skinnier. It is easy to dress up/down. It is easier to recycle without standing out. I can get away with wearing a black outfit multiple times. If I wear a bright coloured outfit it will be more easily remembered. I shop in NYC. People in NYC wear alot of dark colors. The store sells more clothes in dark colors and the cycle continues.

Besides what has already been mentioned black pants/slacks/trousers are good for sitting in public places without having to worry about getting stains or dirt showing when one stands up.

Wearing all black is cool.
Wearing all black is slenderizing.
Wearing all black hides the dirt and soot from the city.

As Shawn Colvin sang:

Back in our home New York
Walking these streets forlorn
We all in our uniforms
Black and black
