Seems to me that the crucial question would be, how long are you in town for? If it's only for a couple of days, I doubt I'd bother with Chelsea. For restaurants, I'd suggest checking Chowhound, although you should be specific about what you're looking for.

We're only there for 4 days, crazy I know but my partner didn't want to take too much time off. We should be there for a week or two. Maybe we'll just walk around Christopher Street. Or if he really wants gay, go to the Pride Parade. But to be honest I'm not in the mood for crowds or pickpockets, and I'm a little worried about crazies, I know I'm being unreasonable. I haven't been to Pride parade in maybe 10-15 years. My partner seems to want to do gay "something", and he wants me to do all the work, so I'll have to figure out something.
Can anyone tell me how do you go to the highline, elevated park?
I guess I shouldn't worry about getting lost anywhere. I could always hail a cab. I got around Paris last fall pretty easily by metro. I found a really nice trip planner for the Paris metro to go from A to B. I can't find something similar for NYC though.
West village is gayer than Chelsea, you can start with Gay street
