That's why i always have a car since I was 17. Public transportation is awful.

It stinks, overcrowded, frequently late, and slow as hell. And keep in mind we are in NYC, which is praised for its public transportation system.

God can only imagine how much worse it is in the south or Midwest for example

Many times I don't.

Have walked home from anywhere in the high 40's or in the 50's up Third or Madison and made it to the mid 80's long before a bus passes. Ditto for going the reverse down Lexington, Second or even Fifth. And don't get me talk about the cross town buses from UWS to UES or vice versa.

Several things also slow down buses:

Passengers who insist on walking to the front of bus to exit (often passing the one or more rear doors). This slows down those wishing to board.

Passengers who after all these years still cannot use a Metro Card properly.

Passengers who stand there and count out change for their fare. I mean change! Who carries coins around with them anymore?

Finally not to single out a particular group, but the old people need to learn how to bust a move! Often their getting on and off a bus is a whole production that takes several minutes.

People who want to use change to pay for their fare because

1.They couldn't acquire a metrocard
2.They have extra change lying around that they wanted to use

Buses are good for the elderly.

I'll take a bus on an extremely hot day if I have a shorter walk than a subway.

In South Brooklyn, subways run north/south more or less. If I want to go east/west, buses are much quicker than subway or walking.

I walk A LOT but in the past year or so, my joints have really started bothering me and I'm pretty young. I've already got the OA going on---now think about all of the older people (who I often see on buses) and other people that aren't elderly with issues.

most people don't walk 7.5mph? Heck I bet most people couldn't run say 7 miles from Columbia University to WTC at 8 minutes pace (7.5 miles/hr)

If there was less of you car people we could have more buses run and they could run faster.

Buses in Manhattan primarily service the elderly and disabled, and are run by the MTA for that very reason. The MTA cannot afford to either retrofit all, or even most subway stations for ADA nor expand paratransit, so buses it is. In the Outer Boroughs, the buses should be reconfigured to not make quite as many stops and have more direct routes. Houston, TX recently did a successful revamp of their bus system to make things more efficient.

MTA needs to implement more "Limited" service for cross town buses. There is no reason for every single bus to stop at every single avenue, especially at rush hours.

Select bus service is *NOT* the answer either. You still wait forever for the 96th, 86th, and 72nd buses Select service or not.

How in the world can someone *NOT* be able to get a MetroCard? They sell those darn things in shops, newsstands, bodegas, etc.. In short not just in subways.
