I know Avenue D is all projects on the East side of the street.

So to live on a street very close to Avenue D (almost at the corner) would be basically like living across the street from the projects.

We are talking about East 2nd Street and Avenue D to be exact.

I'm just wondering how dangerous it would be to live there, how much crime in the area.

Any opinions welcome - Thanks!

Lots of shootings in that area. You can also forget about using any of the local stores without concern for what you might get caught up in.

Seriously? Oh that sucks.

How far away from Avenue D would one have to get before it's safe?

To Avenue C? B? A?

I used to live between C and D about 10 years ago and there was a Kennedy Fried Chicken on Ave D with bulletproof glass. Maybe things have changed since then, maybe they havent.

Everything up to Avenue C is gentrified, Avenue D has a lot of projects but it's not even that hood

Avenue A and B are 100% gentrified and Avenue C like 75%

I would totally live in the area in question
Really, you'd live there?

I wonder if I'd feel comfortable coming home at night, etc.

If Ave D. is projects then how is it "not that hood"?

I would love to live there!

Ave A through C are definitely not hood, check out the area some time. As far East as Avenue C, you see many barhoppers late at night, at least on the weekends. Avenue D might seem a little sketchy to you due to the large amount of NYCHA, but it's not that bad in my opinion. Also, I doubt you'd even do anything on that street except for go to bodegas.

I would say the projects on Avenue D are relatively tame. I was there very late at night once into the morning and I wasn't sketched out.

People telling you to avoid Alphabet City are misinformed.

Think about it, do you really think anywhere in 2016 Lower Manhattan can be that dangerous? The city would not allow it to happen.

Maybe you're right.

I just wasn't sure I wanted to live across the street from the projects.
I don't want to hear gunshots at night.
I don't want to be afraid to go out at night if I have to, etc.

Aren't there projects all over Brownstone Brooklyn?

I doubt you would hear gunshots anyway, maybe check out the precinct stats to see how you feel about crime in the area.

And if you are coming home at night, you would have no reason to feel afraid. You wouldn't be deep in "non-gentrified" territory at all.
