You might have mentioned a relevant part of the story:

Quote:
Police say the pedestrian ran into the Upper West Side intersection against traffic.
That action will often get someone killed as in this case.

oh let's just get it over with already. in 2020 all NYC streets will be filled with nothing but frollicking out of towners screaming in a joyous orgy about how cars have finally been eliminated from NYC. NYC, proper, is now declared the #1 Safe Space for the spawn with money to burn on stupid crap like 10 dollar coffees and 2500 dollar a month studio rents way out the hell in Queens.

Shorter crossing distances and better visibility would eliminate many of these collisions. Neckdowns and curb extensions are the way to go.

This type of design should be implemented citywide. Pretty commonplace throughout cities in Spain for example.

That's why you don't cross major streets when the light is green.

Cars are more dangerous than guns.

Plus the walk signal could have short circuited, so even if it says you have the "right of the way" to walk, the street may have the green light. That's why even when I have the walk signal I always look before I cross.

When I read this I picture happy hipsters skipping along taking wads of cash out of their pockets and throwing it into the air.
