What are some good organizations I can help in NYC that help the disadvantaged or low income residents.
For example helping clean up or spend some time with elderly people ??

You should totally look into food kitchens/pantries. Another good one is Meals on Wheels, where you will deliver food to the elderly.

DFTA is always looking for volunteers. I actually volunteer with them and they have a few different options that you can pick from---it's pretty flexible.
I also recommend NY Cares. There's so many non-profits to help with good causes, it's too difficult to choose just one. NYC cares makes it easier to volunteer for several. They have an orientation and I think they have a background check as well, but it's a great organization to connect you with and help you register for several volunteering opportunities. I used to volunteer with them when I lived in NYC.
