so it would equal out. but you need a car and its a hassle and may cost more.
There is no solid truth to this. Every profession is different.
NYC pays quite poorly for many many many fields, and far above market rate for many others.

Why do some people think Long Island is a cheap alternative to NYC?

Upstate isn't even a suburb of NYC, it's not part of the metropolitan area

Does it balance out.

I Live in NYC. I am just wondering. Trying to relocate. How much would go on a car monthly? Unlimited metro card is $116 around NYC

Don't forget city taxes taken out of your paycheck---depending on where you move, the city may or may not have them.

I have a car. I bought it outright for 8K in 2009. It was two years old. It seems most people cannot buy their cars outright so they either get a loan or they lease a car. That's step one. But if you're not particular, you can get something very cheap.

Then you have gas (varies depending on your car and how much you drive, city vs highway miles, etc.), tolls (whenever you hit them and depending on where you live/where you're commuting to), insurance (varies a lot), costs for care (inspections, oil changes, regular maintenance, expenses for when something big happens like a transmission goes, etc.)

Now if you are getting paid around the same, you could end up ahead but if you are taking a substantial pay cut and moving you might not end up ahead very much at all. And if you look around, you can find one bedroom units in Brooklyn/Bronx for less than $1500 and you're not in a dump.

Your question is weird.
First, NYC has suburbs.

Second, Kansas City, MO, has urban living, including condominiums.

No offense but you sound like a foreigner. NYC has suburbs in Queens, Bronx, and Brooklyn, and within the metro area like Long Island. He's telling you upstate is not considered NYC suburbs. The only part of NYC that has no suburban component whatsoever is Manhattan. There are in fact, other metro areas upstate, which have their own urban core and suburbs.
