Slave masters used to crack their whips on their slaves. The whip would made a loud cracking sound. Hence, cracker.
It's a pretty stupid insult from a black person if you think about it.
Thank you! I've never heard that before, and it is a really bizarre name-calling word, especially when there are very likely an awful lot of people who have no idea what it means.
If someone called me a cracker, I might respond: soup.
The whole "slave whip" thing is obviously from such a long time ago that many simply don't know anything about it. It belongs to another century, and people who are long dead. As with WW2 German angst, there comes a time when the sins of previous generations should not be visited on future generations.
Back in the day when white kids would call black kids the "N" word, the black kids would call the white kids crackers,
as in "Ritz Saltine Cracker" because the color of the cracker is pure white. That's my understanding of the word cracker.
If you look up the definition of cracker it also means poor white.
Its because of the whips, not saltines. Mulies need to learn the history behind the derogatory terms they use.
The whip reference is just a theory, there is no evidence behind it. I know the term in reference to saltine crackers - and some use it for "pride". Most people who use the term cracker - who aren't white use it as referenced above.
