Transportation aside (I'll be taking a subway) which of these 2 beaches is quieter and prettier? My parents grew up in NYC and told me not to go to either. They said the only nice, clean, and safest beaches are all on Long Island but it's too far for me.

Rockaway Beach is quieter and has some quiet, natural spots if you walk far enough. Still will be crowded on a summer weekend, but so are many Long Island beaches. Both Rockaway and Brighton Beach are safe. Rockaway Beach was clean when I visited, Coney Island (next to Brighton Beach) was filthy.

Thanks. When I asked my dad this, he said Rockaway isn't bad but my mom said she would never go and would only go to a private beach club lol.

If you want real quiet go to Riis Park and walk past bay 14. Just go a couple of bays down, it's nice and clean and quiet. Rockin waves to!

Easily Rockaway. Far less population density, and more far from the city core. Some parts are among the quietest in all of NYC.

Um, they both kind of suck. Take the LI RR to Long Beach. It only takes about 45 mins to an hour and is actually a fun ride as everyone on the train is in beach mode.

It costs like $10 to get on the beach, but that keeps the riff-raff out and you'll have bathrooms, lifeguards, vendors, etc. and a nice boardwalk.

I like Long Beach too. If you have the legs you can bicycle there from Brooklyn or Queens. Just peddle fast through seventhfloors hood.
