Sure you can compare life in NYC to life in LA. Why on earth couldn't you? Just because they're different doesn't mean that they can't be compared.
I can only speak for me and my life. I know that my lifestyle is atypical for LA and I know that most people don't move to LA to have my type of lifestyle. Most move here to be near the beach, to be near Hollywood, or maybe to move to the suburbs. That's all cool. My point is just that LA really works for me. I really enjoy living here and experiencing so much of what LA has to offer.
I also enjoy NYC...for visiting. I have family in NYC and enjoy my time there. But I don't know if I'd want to live there. I could for sure but it's no longer at the top of my list.
What sucks about DTLA? It's very livable now and improving rapidly.
You can have that kind of lifestyle in most big cities in the US...a lot cheaper, too. I go to LA about once a year and feel the same way about it, fine for visiting but no way I'd want to live there again.
Am I the only person who feels that if they ever moved out of NYC that they would NEVER visit it again?! Wouldn't it feel like a dirty, cheating, abusive, ex or something? no thanks

Maybe a transit oriented lifestyle (at least 5 or 6 better options than LA) but I disagree that you can have an LA lifestyle in most big cities. The weather, the beach, the hiking, the entertainment options,..these don't exist equally everywhere. We have an over abundance of goodness. Yeah we have negatives too, but for me the positives outweigh them.

And they don't exist equally in LA. The hiking areas, with the exception of places near Malibu, are generally QUITE FAR from the beaches. Many people in LA live HOURS from the beach, so they can't go to the beach on a regular basis.
Or depending on where you live you may live HOURS from the hiking area. To drive 15 miles in LA can sometimes take hours, and if you take public transportation that may entail taking a train to a train to a bus, and that trip may be hours too. The entertainment options are also not evenly distributed throughout the city or the county.
Both cities are in hyper-speed to becoming very similar bland megatropolises based on who can afford to live in them. Thankfully both still have immigrants that add a little bit of spice, otherwise we we might as well just rename LA and NYC Josh and Molly.
In both cities many gay bars have closed due to gentrification. Both cities have Whole Foods and Trader Joes popping up everywhere. In both cities you are never far from a Walgreens or CVS. Both cities have Bank of America or Chase all over the place (Wells Fargo is huge in California but not as big in NY-though it's here).
So the cities are becoming similar down to the brands, and they didn't have the same brands like this in 2000. But this is where corporate consolidation brings you. Bank of America bought Fleet Boston to be in the Northeast and JP Morgan Chase bought Washington Mutual to be on the West Coast. Wells Fargo bought Wachovia to be in the South and in the Northeast.
Of course some years ago Walgreens bought Duane Reade to expand it's presence in NYC and to learn Duane Reade's successful urban operations strategy.
