OP, unfortunately that's a real tough spot to be in this city. Because you make too much to qualify for many of these asinine affordable housing lotteries.
But he/she could afford market rate rents for many studios and 1 bedrooms in your borough
Yeah rent has gone up a lot in The Bronx (not sure why exactly) over the last few years, as it has pretty much everywhere else in the city.
But I see a lot of listings for 1BRs in his/her price range, if he/she is willing to live either in the "hood" or a little futher out.
I chalk it up to people being priced out of upper Manhattan and other areas in the city now considering the Bronx. That and commercial rents have been booming for a few years now in the Bronx, it was inevitable it would spillover into residential.
I went back and read the original post again, I missed where OP said they have no debt. That definitely helps quite a bit. It's still a tough lifestyle especially if its just you.

Right, but it seems to be city wide, a place like Rosedale which is very far out and has not had any boom to my knowledge, is still comparatively expensive. It's like the landlords are REALLY pushing the limit to milk as much money as possible out of the market rate tenants.
If you're paying for an apartment and you meet the 40x rule, an have no debt, and don't expect to live a lavish lifestyle, shouldn't it be doable?
I make way less than that and am doing just fine here. Not hard at all. But I suppose it might be different for someone in their mid-40's than a 26 year old such as myself. OP mentioned they are frugal and have no debt, so those are big pluses when it comes to living in NYC.

It's doable but life happens. It's a tough tight lifestyle. And yeah it definitely feels like there is a collaborative effort by landlords all over the city to squeeze the hell out of the market.

It doesn't seem to be comfortable enough to where it's worth it leaving your life behind and coming all the way here from that far away. But I would argue that if it was a salary of even 10k more per year, it would be if you're into NYC.
The question is, how much longer can they keep doing that? Who's gonna pay 2000 dollars a month to live in a 1 bedroom in Wakefield?
I think the job requires living in NYC within so many days of hire. The job would be located in Manhattan (I assume I can live in any borough). I wondered if the city offered housing help to employees but sounds like that was wishful thinking. I knew a schoolteacher in Manhattan who got some kind of affordable apartment through such a scheme but I think that was 10+ years ago.
@werdywerd - I haven't been hired. I'm just applying and I think I might have a good shot at the job. But I'm trying to get a sense of what life might be like on this salary.
