These "unfortunates" are just clever con artists with a decent head for shady business. It's simple math: if they can make $1 per subway car every 2 min (usually 1 min, these guys are VERY GOOD with their timing, and never stay in a car any longer than that, unless absolutely necessary)., that adds up to being a good amount in an hour. $60+/hr? Not too shabby, especially for a few hours' worth of panhandling.
I once encountered a panhandler (older, skinny type) during one hot summer who had a coffee can full of coins. We all got out on the 168th St. stop on the A train and a young man in his early 20s teased the older guy, asking him how much he had conned off the passengers that day (a few hundred dollars, apparently), and was he willing to trade 5 of his dollars for 4 of theirs. The old man gave him a baleful look, and replied, "Son, as one hustler to another, who you trying to fool? I've been doing this for 15 years".
Side note: the old panhandler likes to first shake his coffee can full of coins a few times, then pound it twice (just noticeably loud enough) on the subway car floor as a means of getting attention. I've seen him a number of times over the last 15 years.
most panhandlers on the train or on the street have iphones and wear $200+ air jordan's, yet the white guilt of the liberals in NYC is overwhelming and i constantly see people giving these scammers money.
Get ready folks, because with BLM/City Council forcing Bratton out and declaring war on Broken Windows, there is a real risk this kind of stuff will be increasing. I'm not trying to be blantantly political about it, but it had to be said.
