I'm asking since NYC was the home and origins of hip hop. It was home of legendary rappers that made a lot of what known as the golden era of hip hop (late 80s to early-mid 90s). Nas, Rakim, Wu-tang, Biggie, Mos Def, KRS-One, Mobb Deep, Tupac (born and raised in NY), etc etc.

I think it still has a strong following among the older generation. The young kids not as much.

I think a lot of younger people listen to it too.
I'm 21 and I love 90s rap, but I'm kinda bored with it now (not counting the stuff I haven't heard) so I mostly listen to newer stuff when I listen to rap.
all of the golden era mc's like Tragedy, KRS1, Craig G, Lord Finesse get their tracks from europrean DJ's and producers.
most of the new NYC rappers are trying to do a southern style of rap which is more dumbed down with cookie cutter synth production. no more turntables or b-boys.
there are of course a few relics left in NY like Mayhem Lauren, Constant Deviants, Timeless Truth, Nick Wiz, Buckwild, but it's difficult for any of these artists to get any shine because terrestrial radio, MTV and BET abandoned hip hop, and the college radio DJ's all retired. The only options left now are blogs and youtube.
