Does it really? Stand corrected, and thank goodness for that.

However places like the Port Authority top out >90k. You add some overtime and can easily make over $100k per year.

Thr nypd salary is ok. The big problem is that nyc is very expensive. This is thr reason why many officers choose to live an hour away from the city due to lower cost of living. I have a family friend who knows nypd officers that live in PA, just an hours drive from nyc on a good day. Other police department like the mta and authority are hard to get into. These folks make good money which are generated from rents, fares and tolls at mta and port authority facilities.

Many people make the comparison of the police as being an occupied force, because the majority don't live in the neighborhoods they are responsible for protecting.

Doesn't surprise me that it occurs all over the country since police departments have been shone to be corrupt all over the US.
Someone didn't read the linked article.

Had you, you'd have known that rather than being some willy-nilly, corrupt officer-induced wawa(whatever) fantasy, this program was actually clearly defined via contract, controlled by the department, and only offered to officers who follow a strict set of rules.

All that, or, you know, the media says cops are always corrupt and racist so that must be the case here too! Take your pick.

Who in their right mind would live in those neighborhoods? This includes those who originally come from them, become a city worked to improve their lives, then leave to further improve their lives. Why should they stay? To appease the racialists? Lol yeah right.

Why would a cop live in the neighborhood where he/she works? Think about their safety as well as their families safety.

Their job is to enforce laws, which naturally creates lots of not so happy people.

Imagine a cop going home at the end of the day and the perp he just collared is waiting for him at his own front door. Or their children are on their way home and the kids pay the price for their parent doing their jobs.

People who have no idea make it seem so easy.

The same is true of teachers and the education field in general. Only recently has the city decided to recruit minority male teachers and address the fact that the teaching staff in NY is disproportionately WHITE.

Yes if a cop is patrolling a neighborhood he might not want to live there.

However absolutely no social contact with the types of people that the cop is policing is very bad, as it allows the cop to just see those people are demons or not human. Look at the language Airborneguy uses when describing people in poor neighborhoods.

We have the same problem in education, teachers not living where they teach and not even being from the community. Only recently has the city worked to address those problems.

I am from those neighborhoods and I still live in them because they are more affordable and yes my income has gone up. Of course the neighborhoods are gentrifying.

I also think it's flawed thinking to assume everyone from these neighborhoods just because move up socioeconomically they MUST move into white neighborhood, which presents a different set of problems.
