The elevator apprentice applications were held in June. It was supposed to begin Monday but with no notification applications were given out Friday/Saturday. So most that arrived Monday as planned - were turned away. It's quite competitive but it's a good opportunity.

This is sad. Have there always been lines for a shot at these apprenticeships? No one should have to stand in lines for days in sweltering heat and vomit from heat exhaustion just for a chance at getting a decent paying job. I guess this is the true measure of the economy.

Aren't the construction companies hiring non-union labor more and more? It seems like I'm always seeing protests in front of construction sites over that very issue.

This is a clear sign that nyc has too many people. Also this shows that how many folks want a job with full benefits where private employers are dumping benefits so they can keep their business afloat, mainly in small or midsized business.

Sad? Bwahahaaaa! Would you like mommy to wait in line for you so you can have your milk and cookies? You either want it bad enough or you don't. Same thing with DSNY, best job in the entire city and guys complain that the process is too long and hard. Whatever, we all went through it. Suck it up or stay home and let someone who really wants it get in...

I agree with you. Anything paying substantially more than the minimum wage is going to have lots of applicants because it is a good opportunity. If you want it bad enough, you will go through the process. Let all the whining fools flake out.

Guys who do this kind of union work have to work in the heat and hazardous conditions anyway. Construction work, utility work, etc does not stop because of the heat. My mom worked for an utility company and my step father was a brick layer. People do what they have to do. But you know all about that working for DSNY.

No need for my Mom to stand in any lines for me, since I've had a nice career that I've developed for years. Not to mention that she is in her 80's and would not be motivated to stand in a line unless it was for the opening of a new casino.

Everyone has to compete for the good jobs, but standing in line for days in extreme heat is excessive. Your comment essentially boils down to "Since I had to do it, then you have you to do it -- and don't complain". That's ludicrous because it provides no justification or rationale beyond your belief that others should have to share in your past difficulties.

My own statement was merely to express sympathy to the guys have to be in these lines to beg for a chance at a good job. That's disturbing, especially since developers are increasingly getting away with hiring non-union labor that is much cheaper. Will these guys be standing in line for nothing eventually?

I hate when you agree with me. It happens maybe twice a year and then I always feel bad all the other times I want to choke slam you through the sidewalk. Not cool. But yea, doing 13+ tons of garbage in this heat and it feels like your face is melting off sucks but it's a great job regardless. Glad you appreciate hard work, you got that from good parents. Being Italian I know bricklayers, some old timers were in their 90s and when they shook your hand you knew these guys were no joke back in the day.

Listen, nothing worth anything comes without effort. See my response to writerdude, standing in line is the least of someone's worries. If they can't do that, what's going to happen (I will use sanitation as an example) when they get sent to the Bronx straight out of training and it's 95 outside with humidity up the a** making it feel like 108 and they got to load 2 trucks totaling 20+ tons of garbage? Are they going to cry and go home? Come on man, this is real life. Enough with this snowflake crap.

This is the problem with today's society. Everybody gets a trophy, nobody wants to be offended or be told anything other then what they want to hear. The real world has always been and always will be a cruel place, eat or be eaten. There are no prancing unicorns in a field playing with lions under a pretty rainbow. Not happening. That's just the way it is.

If there are tons of folks willing to wait overnight for a black Friday Deal or a new Air Jordan, you can bet there would be a lot more lining up for a shot at an union job. There are too much people in NYC for there not to be a line for anything.
