Sister in law just purchased a new house and there is an atrocious shed in the yard. Seems like
Its from the 30s.. Does she need a permit from DOB to take it down? (Pictured below)

I was gonna rip it down with a crow bar this weekend but brother thinks a permit is needed.

Highly, highly doubtful, but you can call the Dept of Buildings office for your borough to confirm.

The DOB hosts homeowner's night. Best be safe and stop by to ask. I went and asked a similar question while in contract to purchase a house. I was told that a permit was needed to ensure proper disposition of the materials. A shed that old may have toxic materials/asbestos.

P.s. if the shed is not listed as an existing structure with the DOB, then what they don't know won't hurt them. You don't "need" a permit for something they don't know exist.

Most likely. Check with the DOB.

Technically yes. You're gonna make a lot of noise taking it down and somebody will call 311 and then that inspector will show up. If the shed is permanently fixed to the ground (which im sure it is), then it is a permanent structure and should have been filed for in the first place. Although you may be in luck if I can search thru some records real quick. DM me the address and I will look into it.

What records for the property would you be able to search? Are these databases public?

So true about your neighbor hearing and calling. When buying a house you can get the best school district, the best block and the nosey, grinch neighbor from hell who lives to call the city. He/she will make you want to sell your house and move to the mountains. Thank god my neighbors have all been super nice and of the 'live and let live' set.

Thanks to Seventhfloor. The DOB search shows two buildings on property and one is the garage. Guess that answers my question.
