That's like 33K a year after taxes... which in NYC is NOTHING. Your best bet is Jersey. The commute is doable. What is that, like less than $700 a week? You want to have disposable income so you can go out and enjoy life, you know.

I really have to wonder how much some of you posters make if you all scoff at 45 - 50k/yr. I agree that housing is very expensive here, but if I didn't know any better, I would think everyone was making 100k+ a year, and the figures don't seem to support that given what the median income is for a family in NYC.

I agree. The median household income (not salary) is about 50k if I'm not mistaken.

Majority of the regular posters on here don't have kids.

I make over 250k per year. But I don't think anyone is scoffing at 40-50k. I think folks are saying to be realistic about how far that gets you in the area that the OP wants to actually live, assuming you can rent at current market rates. You quote the median income of NYC, but NYC is a very large place, so that includes low income housing with NYCHA housing, far away housing in the Rockaways, parts of Staten Island, etc... So, while the median may be correct, but it is also important to realize what that number includes.

Lets be honest, for the life you're probably wanting to live in NYC, the answer is no. I moved to NY making $55k. If you want to enjoy the city, get a/some roommates(s) and try to pay $800 (Without utils) or less.

With my partner, if we combined our salaries, our household income would be around a $160k a year, but for now we both live in our own apartments until we decide to move in together and get married, and neither of us are struggling or need to live with roommates, as we both don't have kids from previous relationships. One of us lives in Manhattan and the other lives in an outerborough by choice.

Let's put an end to all of this bleakness. The OP likely won't be able to live in the most expensive part of Manhattan, but could perhaps find a studio perhaps further north in an area like Harlem. Otherwise, the outerboroughs would be the next option, and commuting to the city for nightlife isn't the end of the world. I think it's appalling to suggest living with roommates making $50k a year, which granted is a bit tight if one has a lot of bills, but there are people making much less here and are getting by. For the people suggesting it, I would be curious to know if you shack up with roommates or live alone and where?

Getting by alone on $45k and having a fun time? Who are these people? My friend makes that much and is always wanting more money because he's skating by.

I'm someone with no college loans and a few credit cards, no other bills. I'm sorry, but if the OP wants to be able to enjoy nightlife, eat out, travel, generally enjoy the city without worry AND save any money, the best bet is to get a roomie. I list those things because if you're not getting to eat all this great food around you or hang out or experience any of it, what's the point? It becomes a tiring, not fun place. Plus, gotta save for those rainy days.

I just think it's better to work a year or two and make more money before trying to live alone. Especially if you don't know anyone. And if he works in Manhattan, living far into BK or Queens will be a looong commute. That long commute is especially fun in the winter, lol. I've always had roommates and have lived for three years in Brooklyn.

My partner and I like organic food, so we generally go to Whole Foods, Fairway or Citarella and pick things that we like there and make it at home. We do eat out on occasion (we will be seeing a Broadway show this weekend and dining as well), and I go to my regular cafés for coffee and the like, but I don't consider that really "going out". I think on that salary it is doable to enjoy NYC AND live alone AND save. The question is what would the OP want to sacrifice?

For example, despite our combined salary, neither one of us have a car. We both use public transit (usually taxis, walking, etc. when in Manhattan). I personally would recommend parts of Harlem or upper Manhattan (for example Inwood could be doable west of Broadway) or parts of the Bronx that have good transportation. For all of the raves about the subway, you are right, it can be a loonnng trip in Brooklyn or Queens or parts of the Bronx for that matter with the constant delays and track work, so I would move somewhere that has other options. Parts of the Bronx have MetroNorth stops that can get you to Grand Central in 20 minutes along with places in Queens like Woodside, and while the trains may not be frequent, there is nothing so terrible about service every 30 minutes during the rush. In the Bronx, Woodlawn comes to mind, although the station is outside of Woodlawn proper. Lots of bars along Katonah Avenue if the OP doesn't want to always go to Manhattan. If the OP can find a studio in a reasonably priced neighborhood, roommates aren't necessary.

Parts of Bedford Park would perhaps be good, esp. since there is the Botanical Garden stop. The 4/5/6 can be a mess in the Bronx, so it isn't that great of an option. Of late it has been especially bad with the ongoing signal problems. Parts of Pelham Parkway work as well, but Norwood? Unless it is near Montefiore, I'm not sure I would recommend it. Very seedy in some parts.
