I'd move to another state before I deal with a 4hr commute each day!

I live in Queens and pay less than half of what someone in Manhattan pays for the same size apartment. Not to mention, I have a backyard and parking for my car.

I wouldn't trade where I live for anywhere in the city. I dont get the appeal. Its congested, filthy, overpriced and overrun with homeless.

Well I've never espoused that nyc-metro burbs are cheap. Quite the contrary. They can be cheaper. Cheap they ain't.

the express bus is still a bus ride , to me it stinks . we much prefer the LIRR . if i worked in manhattan that is the only way i would go daily

I use to live in Bayside many many years ago, I know the areas very very well. I still have friends who live there or moved in there. Yes its different but Bayside has many condo & apts as well.....well not high rises.

At least you have an express bus! Many areas like College Point or north Whitestone are very isolated.

I'm currently at 3hrs each day. I'm planning on moving to the burbs in a few months so I can have direct access to Metro North and knock that number down to below 2hrs.

I am a real life example of my NYC suburbs (while still expensive) is still cheaper then NYC proper.

I moved from DUMBO to LI 1 year ago, and it is cheaper/more bang for your buck.

I owned a 1bd in DUMBO, way too small for my wife and 2 toddlers.

With a budget of 1M, you cannot even get a 2bdr in DUMBO. Public school sucks in DUMBO so you need to shell out 30-40k x 2 to send to toddlers to private school. There is also NYC income tax.

With 1M, I got a decent size house in the North Shore of LI. Property taxes cost more, but its still way cheaper than 2 kids in private school and no NYC income tax.

My office is in the suburbs so commute is a non issue.

Suburbs food and social life suck compared to Bklyn, but at this point in my life, I dont really care.

OP was talking about poor areas or cheap alternatives. I thought about the same thing but this seems off topic

Cheap only if you consider Detroit a suburb
