Cost and Revs had a run in the 90s when they were huge and noticed by everyone. They're not all that ubiquitous in the city these days.

JA tags have had a constant presence since the late 80s throught today (He's still very active it seems).

The designs are still the same except they're switching to LED

Many streets have had their street lights replaces with Corvingtons or other older looking models that the DOT are trying to bring back. By me they replace all the lights between 88st and Woodhaven Blvd with these old school looking models similar to the ones you find on Austin Street.

The garbled announcements on the trains. Do they sound like that in any other city?

Those are also in Manhattan and Brooklyn, but yeah I agree. Buildings like that seem to be unique to NYC.

Some iconic New York things that don't get talked about?

-Wooden water tanks on the roofs of buildings of every kind, including new ones.
- Bodegas with yellow and red sheet metal awnings that are held up with metal straps and ornamented with colored light bulbs.
- All those exterior fire escapes.
-The stoops of brownstones.
-Street vendor carts that smell of charcoal and that sell big warm pretzels, and also chesnuts during the winter holiday season.
-Umbrella sellers who appear like magic when it rains, and who sell cheap umbrellas that will break by their third use.
-The set-back buildings that were built to meet the Zoning Ordinance of 1916. (Look down Seventh Avenue in the 30s to see that at work.)
-Bakeries selling rainbow cookies.
-"White Rose" brand items in grocery stores.
