Some iconic New York things that don't get talked about?
-Wooden water tanks on the roofs of buildings of every kind, including new ones.
- Bodegas with yellow and red sheet metal awnings that are held up with metal straps and ornamented with colored light bulbs.
- All those exterior fire escapes.
-The stoops of brownstones.
-Street vendor carts that smell of charcoal and that sell big warm pretzels, and also chesnuts during the winter holiday season.
-Umbrella sellers who appear like magic when it rains, and who sell cheap umbrellas that will break by their third use.
-The set-back buildings that were built to meet the Zoning Ordinance of 1916. (Look down Seventh Avenue in the 30s to see that at work.)
-Bakeries selling rainbow cookies.
-"White Rose" brand items in grocery stores.
