Are Amazon orders subject to Sales tax?
Is this something new?

I have ordered an appliance shipped from Georgia and paid sales tax. In the past no tax was levied.
Has Amazon made a deal with New York and other states?

It used to be that unless there was physical presence in the state no tax was levied?

yes, amazon is subject to sales tax.

If you don't pay sales tax online, you are suppose to pay on your tax return. There is a line item for it. If its a lot, the form is ST810/ST330

New York State residents do pay sales tax on Amazon purchases. Each state is suing Amazon separately, as I understand it. The NYS tax has been in effect for over a year, as I remember, possibly longer.

Depends on your state and where the seller is located. Some things will be taxed, others will not.

That being said you are SUPPOSED to pay them through a tax form at the end of the year. Supposed to

lol...only people who pay this are wealthy CPAs or tax lawyers who have something to lose if they get audited.

Thanks everyone. So now I know.

NYS has passed a law that subjects Amazon to collection of Sales Tax on taxable deliveries to State residents.
That was an unpleasant $19 surprise for me (countertop dishwasher.)

Overstock.com seems to be still fighting the issue and I got a carpet from them last year with no tax.

Sales taxes, the most regressive of taxes should be abandoned.

Been like that for a long time, government used the affiliate links angle to threaten Amazon but they didn't fight it and voluntarily started charging everybody. If you want to avoid sales tax on Amazon you need to ship to Delaware or New Hampshire. Otherwise buy from another store like newegg for electronics

yea between the sales tax now and pushing everyone to prime, Amazon isn't the same for me anymore. seems when I do buy they take forever to ship now too, maybe trying to push me to prime?

You can't buy small items anymore without getting hit with tax AND shipping unless you wait until you have $50 of stuff to buy. Been shopping more on ebay because of it.
