Hi everyone, I just received a letter from NYC Transit for a pre-employment screening for track worker, exam #3600, which I took a few years ago. I turned 56 this year and now worried maybe they'll think I'm too old yet I'm in good shape, stronger and faster than most guys my age, and can out jog my own son. Will my age be a factor? I don't want to get another big let down as I've already had with other prospective employers; they've come back and mentioned something about having other better qualified candidates but I've had my suspicions. I've always been well qualified or overqualified for jobs I've applied for and now I'm losing all faith and hope. I'm actually a computer tech but that field is swamped and I want to do some stable and consistent work for at least the next 10 years. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
P.S. I also have a felony conviction from about 25 yrs ago for possession and sale of a controlled substance.

Reason: Forgot to add extra details
Track work does get physically demanding at times, mostly due to the elements tho, blazing heat working in the tunnels during summer or freezing cold during the winters. But it's a civil service position so as long as you can pass whatever medical exam they give you, you should be okay. And also I know people working for NYCT transit with felonies, just make sure you disclose everything to them when you fill out your paper work

While not as physical as track worker, my brother successfully became a subway train operator this year at the age of 52. So if you can jump the physical and other hurdles they put in front of everyone, your age should make no difference.
My brother was a track worker. Hard work. Track crews replace rails and have to lift it in place. In the winter they had to shovel snow off the tracks on elevated lines. He advised to go with IRT because it's supposed to be better to work on. Don't know if they still give a choice any more.

Dont forget they have lug around all of that heavy equipment with them on the trains to get around when on duty. It's definitely very physically demanding work.
They have older people there working who started this year.
Age is no factor, everyone does what they can to help the job get done.
While the guys in the gangs do want anyone using age as reason for working, as long as you give effort you will be fine.
if you pass medicals, there is no reason why they shoulnd't hire anyone.
City just gave exams for Computer IT Titles a month ago.
