While it is very touristy it will be missed. Still a recognizable NY institution. The owner wanting to step down after years of running it is understandable.
More like after several years of legal/court battles including a messy divorce, caught stealing gas from ConEd, caught stealing wages from employees and so forth the owner wants out and to sell the building.
Midtown property is going for a good penny these days, and while not on "Billionaires Row" 854 and 856 Seventh Avenue are the last two low rise buildings that block and are on corner lots. Around the corner on 55th behind 856 is another low rise building.

For me, a great pastrami back in the day was at the late, great Sloan's supermarket, by Police Plaza! A whole lot of pastrami on hero and mustard, at one third the price!
The key to good pastrami or corned beef: Find a good mom and pop deli, somewhere in a neighborhood (outer boroughs, wherever) and ride with it til it dies......!

Not quite. There's been a spate of new/revivalist Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine (about a half dozen in NYC in about as much time) but the portions are generally way less ridiculous than they used to be.
The restaurant is closing but their wholesale food preparation operation in Carlstadt, NJ will continue in operation. They ship food products all over the country from there.
If you cant make money selling $20 sandwiches then all is wrong with the world.
