Does Elk Candy still exist on the upper east side?

I don't patronize NYC candy stores much, but I have made a point of expeditions to a few outer-borough ice cream parlors, although they usually proved disappointing.

They looked like this:

They always had signs from Coca-Cola. The more modern candy stores from the 60s had green signs with a round red coke logo.

You still have Eddie's Sweet Shop in Forest Hills and Schmidt's Confectionery in Woodhaven. Both been operating in Queens for about 100 years.

Schmidt's chocolate is great and I love the old decor. It's like your stepping back in time upon entering the store. The owner is nice as well. I've driven and walked by Eddie's so many times, but I haven't made it in there, yet.

In my neighborhood of New Brighton on Staten Island we had Macs. It was a place we would all meet as kids. The schoolyard where we hung out was right across the street. Egg creams , milkshakes, sundaes, magazines. papers and candy. Thats where the Staten Island Advance would be dropped off so we could deliver it after school. As we got older we sometimes would still meet there before we went out at night. There were stores like that all over the Island. Those times and stores are sorely missed.

Growing up in Washington Heights in the 80s a candy store was somewhere in between a Bodega and a tobacco store. They usually weren't as sleazy as a tobacco store and depending on the store they were sometimes nicer than a bodega. Also most times they were pretty small.

You also have Economy Candy and The Sweet Life, both on the Lower East Side. The Sweet Life only dates back to 1980, but they've kept the nostalgia.

I grew up in the Highbridge area of the Bronx. We had 3 candy stores nearby...all of them had soda fountains. One of them, we nicknamed Sloppy Sams because Sam the owner was sort of shabby. He also sold loose cigarettes for a few cents each.

I think of candy stores as stores that primarily sell newspapers, magazines, lottery tickets, soft drinks, candy, greeting cards, toys, and various other supplies. There's still one near me like that. I guess some consider that a stationery store.
