How do you figure out what city/state council men/woman to contact if you been denied for affordable housing due to them not correctly calculating your income?
No talking about appealing. It has how to in all letters that claim you were denied. My question is who higher up can I bring this to? Too many people are being denied due to them not calculating income correctly for independent contractors and this has been going on the last few years. It need to be brought to someone attention.
Vicki Been is the commissioner of HPD; you should be able to find her email on their website. She may be a good person to send your concerns to. Good luck.

Thank you. Every year several people I know seem to get denied due to them guesstimating their income inaccurate. They don't have a a specific formula for freelance workers and how they put numbers together isn't even close.
This is a major issue. The new guidelines came out, but it doesn't seem as if self-employment income has been addressed any better. I would consider contacting the mayor's office -- I believe his office, along with HPD and various housing groups, was the impetus behind some of the new guidelines. Even though formal new guidelines are issued only every few years, amendments (the credit score is the most salient example--policy on that was changed in Sept 2015) and updates are issued with greater frequency.

Every NYC resident has a representative in the City Council. If that person is effective and doing his or her job, there is a community liaison in the office who can help you and point you in the right direction. Because you don't seem to know who yours is, I'm thinking the person is more of a do-nothing. But Google to find out which district you live in. You will get further if your council person helps you.
Great advice, macnyc2003. And to OP, here's the site on how to find your council member. Just plug in your address, and your rep comes up with names and contact info for all staff members. All New York City Council Members
