Been living in my house 23 years, original sewer lines from 1955 were still installed. When they pulled them out of the hole they were as brittle as wet cardboard.

LOL nope because they also cover the water main as well as any backups my sewer line may get down the road.

what sort of material was the pipe - Cast Iron? Clay?

It could have very well been paper lol, thats what the whole pipe felt like. Plumber said he wasnt sure, possibly a cheap clay from the way it felt

My two next door neighbors recently had to have their lines replaced. One water and one sewer. Since our houses were built at the same time and a giant sycamore tree is growing above the pipes figure I'm next so I took the insurance. If my pipes were newer or recently replaced I wouldn't bother.

$156 per year insurance is a no-brainer if you have old pipes
