Good news for traffic in and around NY City
Not good news for those who took the BTO Exam last year

New York State to Eliminate Cash Option for Paying Tolls - The New York Times

For motorists in New York, the only things that may rival death and taxes as certainties are traffic and tolls — the latter of which, for the better part of the last 80 years, have been collected by hand.

Those near-certainties are soon to change.

In an effort to reduce congestion, tollbooths will be eliminated at all Metropolitan Transportation Authority bridges and tunnels next year, and replaced with automatic tolling, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced on Wednesday.

Instead of charging drivers who are stopped at toll plazas, the authority will use sensors and cameras to automatically charge cars that have been equipped with E-ZPass; those without it will have their license plates recorded by camera, and a bill will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

They should make sure all of the toll workers are rehired in other MTA positions, it is completely unfair to them. On the other hand, this will be great for traffic. I've sat in traffic by the New Jersey tunnels and bridges for hours at times. This will really reduce a lot of traffic

The changes won't do anything to help you though as the PANYNJ runs those tunnels and bridges. The MTA tunnels and bridges are the Midtown, Triborough, Tappan Zee and the ones which connect the Bronx with Queens.

If you live in NY or NJ and drive why don't you have an E-Z Pass? Anyone who does live here and drives but doesn't deserves what they get IMHO. Since they introduced prepaid EZ-Pass for those that do not own their own vehicles it is more of a no brainer.

The rest of that traffic backed up on various Hudson River crossings or the VZNB are mostly out of state drivers, and or those that have rented a vehicle but don't know.

One of life's greatest joys is when traffic is backed up for miles waiting for the Lincoln or Holland, to get into the EZP lane and keep on keeping on.

I'll let you in on a little secret. They already record every license plate that passes through a toll booth, and likely run them through a BOLO list in real time. The also keep the records to aid in future investigations. They've likely been doing this for years now.

I now see a lot of NYPD vehicles with plate scanning cameras on them. They're likely running whenever the vehicle is, and doing the same thing.
