So a very close relative of mine passed not too long ago (my cousin) and her daughter lived with her in the apartment. However, the lease was under the cousins name but the daughter wants to continue paying rent for at least a month or two until she finds her own place. How long does it take for NYCHA to take action in the eviction/clearing the apartment process once a resident dies? I believe the lease is due by September-October of next year 2017. Will the daughter still be able to pay rent and not be put out?

Thanks for any info.

It depends.

If your cousins daughter was not on the lease, she has no claim on the apartment and can be evicted at any time. If she is sure that she only needs a month or two to find a place of her own, she might be able to talk to the manager of her particular NYCHA development about using the time to clear the apartment of her mother's belongings. There's no guarantee how much time that will buy her, though.

Was NYCHA informed of the death yet?

Simple. She has to go into management and ask for a grievance. She has to show death of certificate, also your cousin has to be on the lease as well or even her being the next of kinship. If the lease is still effective until sometime next year, than she can possibly continue paying the same amount of rent.
