I don't really know. I was born here and I make my living here. I left NY but it did not work out so I returned. I did not want to return but that is how it turned out. I wish I could live closer to my friend but the job market is not good for my field. I am not sure if I would be happy there long term. Visiting a place is not the same as living there. Who knows? Who cares? Wherever you go, there you are.
I was forced to move here because Columbia had the top program in the country in social work and they gave me a full scholarship. I hated that it was in NYC at the time.
Now I could move anywhere when I retire and don't want to leave.
I couldn't tell that you were such a smart student that CU would be willing to purchase you at a full price...
I married an American who refuses to leave (at least for now) so I'm an immigrant by design. I started visiting the city 15 years ago, and would have moved here at that time more willingly. Not my first choice of places to live at this point in my life...however as of this year now that we have a child together, I'll be tied down here a little longer than expected. I do my best to appreciate the city for what it is.
after 15 years and you are still not committed? I view that as an issue of infidelity...
You could live a trump-style of millionaire life in Florida with your fat teacher's pension...isn't that tempting to consider?
No, not at all.
Also I think you are quite mis informed about teacher pensions. Yes, I will probably get about 35,00/yr and will be very grateful for it but that's hardly enough to live like a king anywhere....even in Florida.
I will be extremely comfortable in my retirement but it will be mostly because of saving and investing my whole life completely outside of the pension system. It will be because I purposely lived below my means for decades in order to save and invest and the fact that my apartment will be free and clear with only a $650/mo maintenance. Actually I don't think I could live anywhere else in the country cheaper than here in NY because I don't think I could find an apartment like mine....even in Florida ... For 650/mo.
$650/mo with a 1/2 fare metro card is a pretty good place to be re cost of living in retirement.

Plus you'll have social security that more than covers your maintenance.
