Even though I'm Jewish I appreciate the holiday because the entire country virtually shuts down.
It was one of my favorite things when living in Israel. For national holidays, the entire country would take a break/slow down. It's much needed to rest and reflect.
I take issue with the OP's original post on this line though:

Please don't. there's a reason some people don't celebrate and it's rude to make others feel like crap about not having a family by inviting them to your stupid family's celebrations that most likely the person would want nothing part of!
