Well, something happened.
First, I saw a list of agencies that are expected to cut back. My hiring agency isn't one of them. I take that as a good sign that the job is still mine. (won't be eliminated) I was selected and basically hired. My credentials are waiting for me to pick them up. Apr 22 is coming soon. (hiring freeze will be over)
The agency takes care of Federal buildings all over the country. The job (GS12) would give me a path for upward mobility (a possible GS13 later). So - upward mobility AND good transfer to the perfect retirement location.
HOWEVER my current agency has a GS12 job opening. I qualify. I'm probably going to apply just because I'm not sure one way or the other. I don't want to stay here in CT. If I took the job it would probably be my last promotion. (there's just no opportunity to move any further up) I'd stay here until retirement then relocate to... not sure where. I have about 6 years until I retire.
Nuts and bolts: NYC job will start me at $85K. If I got a GS13 there (I qualify for their 13 jobs and I could apply after a year as a 12) I'd be at about $98K. If I go elsewhere it will probably be a bit less for locality pay but cost of living... y'all know. NYC.
Where I am as a 12 they'd start me at probably $80K, maybe 82 if they feel generous. I could top out after 6 yrs at close to $90K.
The first year, IF I could find a place at $800/month JUST A ROOM FOR LET, do the math. That's $9600/yr for rent on top of my mortgage. So if the difference in pay is just $5K, I'd be out a chunk, which I could do for a year, no problem. Would it be worth it?
Back story: I have another half and I'm not very happy. I feel like taking the job here would mean I want to try to work things out. Taking the NYC job would be great for career, great for retirement, not so great for relationship but not impossible. We've talked about me commuting home on weekends for a year until the house sells, then getting a place closer (NJ?). He wants to retire somewhere else. He's self employed but hasn't been contributing as much monetarily but does some GREAT work on the house. He's putting sweat equity in it.
Have I lost you? Is everyone tired of me? I know you guys will see things from a different view. Yes, I know the salary isn't that great (compared to some) but it's fine for me. The new job would pay commuting expenses, too, so that's a plus. Right now I drive 32 miles one way to work.
Reading over it seems like it makes more sense to stay where I am, if possible. If I don't get the job here I still have the one there. Right now I'm just under $78K so that's a consideration. ugh *rips hair*
The lifting of the hiring freeze only added new stipulations that need to be figured out. Still no forward momentum for me nor my coworker. (except he continues to get interviews)
I left the entire state of NY and relocated just so I don't have to deal with commuting into Manhattan anymore! When your commute is more stressful than your job, you know its time for a change.
My coworker got his official offer and is negotiating his start date (he's moving across the country).
Hoping I hear something soon. Found a room for rent that sounds promising and is only about 13 miles away, which is about an hour commute.
Just noticed there's another upstate NY job that just opened, not the one close to Niagra but it looks like it might be the same job just based in a different location (Champlain). I applied. I'm tentatively selected for the Manhattan job, have passed the checks, have an ID card to pick up but I'm still waiting for a firm offer/start date. I want them to know I'd be willing to do either. Pickins are slim.
You are 56, so perhaps it is time to consider living near where you want to spend your retirement?
Well that's exactly right. This particular agency has possibilities all over the country. I was hoping to be there by now but SOMEONE wanted to return to CT because of kids/grandkids. Can't retire here!
