Because people love to complaint it is human nature. Plus there is this love hate relationship most of us have with NY, just like I have with the City-Data forums.
I'm on Long Island, and I happen to be in a good paying job and establishing my pension is the main reason. I have 10 yrs to go, then I can get out of the expensive, freezing, overcrowded, aggressive rat-race nightmare that is NY.
I moved here for my career, because I knew that if I was going to amount to anything in my field I had to come here. I've watched a lot of people come and go, yes it can suck really bad some days, and yes you have to be invested. Most people that left were honestly whiny prima donnas that thought it was like what they saw on t.v. or something LOL... the ones that stayed had real things to run from... It's not an easy place to live by any means. I get frustrated and pissed at points because I know I could own solid real estate in a lot of other parts of the country by now. Also that it's a lot more laid back in other places, the taxes are lower, etc. But ultimately I stay for the job, the connections, the cultural amenities, and a lot of other things. I simply wouldn't have the network and the contacts I have here anywhere else, nor even a fraction of the opportunity. If there's anything I truly DESPISE these days it's the billionaire class ruining Manhattan with their stupid buildings like 432 Park and One57.

Live downtown, avoid crowded streets and don't take the Subway whenever possible.
Hard to beat NYC if you live like that !!
