My niece is moving to NYC soon. She is a college graduate and is sure she can get a job making $35k. She wants to get an apartment with about 1 or 2 roommates and will be paying about $1000/month plus utilities.
She has had a lot of interviews and it really looks like she will find a job soon based on the interest in her and the fact that she is willing to start in an entry level position
I"m worried about her because she is young (22) and has never lived anywhere but in the North Carolina.
She makes good decisions most of the time, doesn't drink to excess and basically has a good head on her shoulders.
I want her to have a great experience and learn a lot but I can't help but worry.
Does she have savings? Is her family in a position to help out in a pinch?
It's doable, but she might want to aim a bit lower on rent since she's willing to live with roommates. Better if she has friends here already and can room with them.
NYC is among the safest major cities in the US and any neighborhood she's likely to be attracted to probably has a good chance of being among the safer neighborhoods.
Seems like she'll be headed here after the worst of winter, but it's important for her to understand how tondress for the cold by the time winter swings back around.
I am in a similar position as your niece. I think 35000 is a bit low to me since it comes out to around 25000 after taxes :/
I always thought NYC had higher salary? Can anyone currently living in NYC give some insight?
Do you live in the city and share an apartment with friends? I wonder if during your next review you can ask for a bigger raise or maybe try to find a better paying job now that you have more experience?
It sounds like she knows what she's doing. I also moved here from NC, but I had already lived in global cities both abroad and in the USA. She sounds like she would do well provided she can land that job.
She does. She's very smart and also a really genuine person. I think she will do well but I'm just concerned about the cost of living and if the job she gets will pay enough to live in the city.

How long have you lived there and how to do you like it?
