Not breaking news for us here in the city I guess, but I just saw some statistics that made me realize that we have a lot more to fear from drugs than guns. Last year NYPD recorded 335 homicides. But there were over 1,000 deaths for drug overdoses. (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...data.html?_r=0)
Maybe it's been that was for a few years now, as crime falls while opioid use rises. But its the first time I noticed the numbers: That three times as many people killed themselves as were shot, knifed, bludgeoned to death, run over, or tossed from buildings. It's just sad, sad, sad.

Prescription drug abuse is way out of control. I read people are now using dogs to get painkillers from vet office that humans can take also. People combine these with alcohol sometimes which is an easy way to fatally overdose.
I spoke with a friend from the old neighborhood 2 weeks ago. There were a lot of local guys from the mid to late 90's who hung around the area. About 90% of these guys are dead now. Nearly all from drugs many prescription abuse. Its horrendous . A few others wound up in jail or live a spartan existence never having left the area due to substance abuse. Its a vicious cycle that is hard to free oneself from. Those who do often go on to make good lived but its a monumenal battle.
The news it out there that anyone can come to NYC and be homeless and score GREAT drugs and still have the right to housing. See those two people from michigan who were all over the news a few months ago that came to NYC with that EXACT intention (words right from their mouths actually so no making this up) and essentially murdered their own two babies in the process.

And New Yorkers like to fancy themselves on being the most sophisticated people on earth.
