My parents are both either about 6 months or a year and six months from retirement (they are undecided), and are considering moving from South FL to the NYC metro area (i know, opposite of most people!).
They love NYC, but want somewhere that is quieter, but with easy access to the city.
Ideally, they'd like to be in a place with very easy access to Midtown NYC, within 45 minutes, that is safe, and has some urban life to it, but is not overly hectic and grungy either.
They will be looking to buy, with a budget of about 150-200k can maybe stretch to 250k, condo/co-op, and the three most important things for them are safety, easy access to Midtown, and low key urban vibe, and the quality of schools does not matter.
New Rochelle is one of the places they've thinking about, along with places in New Jersey...are there any areas that are realistic and viable for them within the city? Perhraps parts of Riversdale? Kingsbridge?
You pretty much have your pick from most of the larger towns and cities in Westchester County....there are plenty of 1 bedroom co-ops in your parent's price range throughout southern Westchester County. Try Pelham, New Rochelle or Port Chester. All 3 have nice walkable downtowns and listings that are close to Metro-North. Your parent might be priced out of White Plains, but I'm not sure.

One place that your folks might consider, although its inside the city, is Riverdale in the Bronx. Seems to check off all the boxes--safe, quiet, and easy access to Midtown via MetroNorth, express bus, or the No. 1. And you can still get a one, maybe even a two-bedroom up there in that budget range.
And across the Hudson consider Ft. Lee, which also ticks off all the boxes. Only caveat: some of the low-priced places there are coops with high maintenance costs. But not all of them, so give it a looksee. And it's a pleasant community with a decent little downtown and easy access to NYC.

Thank you! Riverdale is one place that definitely seemed like an option based on the little research i had done. Would you think Kingsbridge in the Bronx is an option too? Why yes or no? Thanks so much!
I don't really know Kingsbridge, but my impression is that it would be somewhat busier and citylike than Riverdale because it is closer to Broadway. I believe it also has a larger Hispanic presence than Riverdale, which is heavily Jewish. But maybe another poster more familiar with the Bronx than me can weigh in.
Jackson heights historic distric or forest hills. These neighborhoods still have old timers living here, and they do step out of their apartments to keep active.

JH is 15 minutes to midtown, and FH , maybe 20.
Also Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street (JH) as well as the 71st Avenue/Continental Avenue (FH) have elevators which help when growing older and stairs become a concern.
If you are the same asking in the Jersey forum, a nice 1 br condo in Jackson Heights, from 72 street to 85 street is a good fit.
Not only for the subway, but also for Doctor appointments, good shopping and resturaunts, multi lingual services.
From 37 avenue to Northern Blvd , closer to northern blvd is quieter, not as busy.
