Is anyone watching this documentary on Kalief Browder? Quite sad! The young man committed suicide and his mom had a heart attack and died a couple of weeks after the documentary was shown in sundance or some viewing.

I didn't know Rikers was this corrupt but also the rampant gang violence is insane.

I posted a while ago about this:

and suggest you also read the poignant story in The New Yorker:

Awful story. Mass incarceration is an incredible beast. I watched part 1 of this series the other day and it is really sad. They explained how corrupt the bail system, how the police held him with zero evidence ... what a terrible justice system America has.

It may as well been $5 million dollars. o way they could come up with that type of cash that most of us walk around with on a daily basis like it's pocket change.

I wouldn't ask questions without watching. He had bail and it took his mother two weeks to cough it up however they had a hold on him because he violated probation by being arrested (even though he was wrongfully arrested). So bail was moot. There is a lack of justice in this country for the poor.

I don't see how they can. This kid was just walking back home and was wrongly identified. The victim was not able to provide a positive ID on Kalief. It was a maybe, i am not sure, the crime happened 2 weeks ago etc. The victim's story kept on changing. The case should have been thrown out. The whole issue was made worse by the fact that Kalief was under a 5 year probation for joyriding in a bakery truck which was violated by this new arrest.
