Statisticaly Times Square and midtown are the most dangerous parts of Manhattan. It has to due with all the stupid drunk bridge and tunnel crowd coming into the city to get wasted. Also all the tourists that are ripe for a mugging.

Check the NYC crime map. Midtown is dark red.

Oh, and Lol just Lol at Times Square being a "nice area." Lol

According to Bloomberg, 4 years ago when he gave a lecture he said NYC is safe you you should feel comfortable to walk anywhere at any time.
Ironically in those 4 years I never heard of him taking a midnight strolls through Brownsville, South Bronx, East Harlem, ect ect ect

NYC has bad neighborhoods, but nowhere that I'd say is too bad to visit, at least in daylight hours, except ENY/Brownsville if you're white or howard beach if you're not.

The stats all say midtown/times square has the most crime, but that's artificial because there are so many people there, many of whom are dumbass tourists.

They'd be considered working class neighborhoods in Brooklyn or the Bronx.

Go to the Starbucks in Howard Beach. At least half the clientele is not white, and it appears no one is sipping their frappuccino's in any type of fear.

Again, if New York is more like London that is a big plus and something to be proud of...crime is nothing to brag about, it's something to be ashamed about. I sense that many hipsters get angry when you tell them they live in a nice city with many respectable citizens. It just isn't very "edgy" and doesn't rhyme with their persona.

Shut up already and find a girlfriend.

Hey dumbass, the OP asked a very generalized question so I gave a very generalized answer. Go take a look at crime stats.
