Department stores are dinosaurs that are slowly becoming extinct. The business model no longer works in a large number of cases in this new technology age.

Don't worry ,you'll get over it when it happens. I cried when they closed B Altman's, Alexander's, Gimbels and A&S . It's wrenching at first but then you move on. Altman's and Filene's ( in Boston) were the hardest to take.
Still get a bit misty eyed when I walk past the Altman's building and remember what it was like inside.
We walk past the Target Store in the East River Plaza up on 117th St on the way to ALDI'S. The only function of the Target is to provide a place to pee before the walk to the M15 bus on Second Ave and the ride home.
Admittedly this store is not the best example of a Target and is far worse than the one we had in the back yard at Newport (Jersey City.) They never seem to have what I think they SHOULD have.
Herald Square doesn't need any more retail. Penney's and Jack's provide all I need.
But yeah, that K-Mart is a real dump.

Penney's is doomed too. They'll probably close before Macy's.
Nobody beats Penney's seasonal clearance sales, although I probably have enough clothes to last me my expected lifespan and cannot squeeze anything more into my closets. I would still be sad to see Penney's go.
I really cannot see Target blowing Penney's out of the water...rather, quite the opposite.
Some here have mentioned or alluded to the point I will be making here. I'll state it here more explicitly:
Not every TARGET that opens in the big/larger cities is a "full-size" Target. That is, there are Targets in varied larger cities that look large on the outside and inside (and sometimes are multi-floor if located in a denser part of a city) but they DON'T have absolutely everything that a full-sized Target does. For instance, they opened a "CityTarget" (now just simply calling it "Target") in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston, MA. It takes up two floors and the two floors combined look like it might have whatever a more suburban Target has but it has maybe ±80% of what a full-size Target does. That's better than having no Target at all yet sometimes I'll instead take a trip to a full-size, full-service Target location (wherever that might be located) if I want to be sure of having the entire Target selection of goods and services.
For instance, in full-size Targets, they have a jewelry dept that is staffed and I'll go there to buy a digital watch. Yet you likely won't find that at a "CityTarget".
