Hi,

I recently bought a house built in 1965 from original owner. I am doing renovations. On the first floor, there is wall to wall carpet. I pulled the carpet back and there is carpet padding, and then under the padding there is this black tile, the top of it has a fuzzy soft texture. My contractor picked it up (they can be removed) and said it looks like old dried up tile of some sort, and then he snapped it into two and I saw thick black dust. Under this black tile, is concrete.

I have attached pictures of the tile. Does anyone know what this is? Could it be vapor barrier tile? I hope it is not asbestos tile.

Thanks!

What is this under carpet?-img_0002.jpg

Probably is asbestos. Sure looks like it. Hope nobody inhaled any of the dust when it was snapped. That stuff is deadly.

You generally can't tell by looking at them. That is a time period when they were in wide use though, so it is certainly a possibility. It would make sense to get them tested before you go ripping them out, there is a considerable downside if you guess wrong.

If it's not glued in place it's probably some sort of carpet underlayment.

Google asbestos tiles under carpet and you will find it's very likely asbestos is what you have.
Sounds like it was very common in the 60's to underlay carpets with it.

Just looks like celotex or homasote to me.

Agree with above poster, I was thinking celotex, asbestos tiles when used were 9"x9" color tiles and glued down.

Not necessarily, there were definitely black 12x12 asbestos tiles. But yeah, if they are in fact 12x12 and loose (or did they come loose over 50+ years?) it is less likely that they are asbestos. It is still something I would recommend verifying prior to ripping them out.

It looks like a tar paper underlayment whose function is to keep moisture (and thus mold) out of the carpeting and padding above.
I don't think it is tile. The picture gives the appearance of a tile seam, but I think that is just the paper cracking at the seam in the wood plank floor.

Mr.Music, are you going to put down wall to wall carpeting again?
