As far as the job in Mott Haven, if you have to create a thread like this then it's probably a good idea to pass on the job since you will have that fear on the back of your mind. No one here can know how you will react to a situation.

I'm in student loan debt, and besides liking the mission of the school, the salary is likely the best I will get for a LONG time. I'm looking to get married soon, and this could make that a lot easier.

That being said, the job is in Mott Haven. I am a very fair, very slight white girl, 25 but look quite a bit younger. The school is a 5 minute walk down Willis Avenue from the 2 train. I WILL be walking at night (6-7pm) to the subway, and I do have to take the subway in the evening through Harlem. This is what I need to know: is it worth it? How likely am I to be a victim of violent crime, sexual assault, and/or mugging? It is a wonderful job, but am I putting myself in danger?

If you'd like to respond more personally, DM me here.
Hey OP, the neighborhood is totally safe, just don't walk around at 3am, and you can learn which streets to avoid [like any part of town]. I live off that train stop, walk south on Willis all the time, and the worst that's every happened is an old lady spat in my direction and called me a 'hipster gentrifier", which admittedly, did not feel awesome, but I've never felt endangered and I am also a very pale slim person. It's not the 70's anymore, if you like the school take the job, I'd be happy to have more dedicated teachers in the community.

So you had someone spit in your direction? Interesting. I knew I wasn't hallucinating. I've seen people throw trash down in my presence in similar areas. So what did her spitting on the ground exactly mean? My assumption is that she didn't care for your presence.

@pierrepont7731

Yeah, she spat in front of my feet directly in my path of travel, inches from my shoes, and then called me "Hipster Gentrifier" so I think it's totally cool to assume she didn't care for my presence.

I still really like the area, it has everything I need, good transpo, and I live walking distance to Aldi [which is heaven].
