Hi All, I'm working on a project and interested to hear stories about renting in this wonderful city. I moved here last year and thankfully did not come across any bad experiences (actually got super lucky) but I've heard of horror stories So if you have any "negative" experiences, please share away!

Becareful. A buddy of mines is a super. One day on a weekend he came across two women. These two women were from Michigan I think and wanted to move to NYC. These women got scammed lovely. A broker showed them an apartment. They signed a lease, however the lease was not approved by management. The two women paid 7k in first month, last month and security deposit and they got screwed over. They asked for the money back from Management. The broker was out with the money on a one way trip to the Dominican Republic. The management never issued a visitation for apartment vieweing, and the two Michigan women never filled out an application for the apartment.

My tiny little screwing. I took an apartment and paid a half month "agent's fee" and moved in. A few months later I met the owner and he said "That son of a ***** charged you for moving in?....I PAID HIM HIS FEE"
My deal was a good one so I had no regrets.

But beware agents. They are a slimy lot.

Omg wow.. it's so sad and pathetic that these people would do that to others, especially in such a high cost area already and some people are probably digging in their savings to secure these apartments :/

unless it is an established realty firm, or you go to the building in person, and get the management office number, I would be very weary.

NO MONEY UNTIL YOU ARE THERE WITH KEYS AND LEASE IN HAND! Always pay in check!. no matter what.

I would say most realtors on zillow will be legit, and have a track record posted in their ratings. you might pay a little more this way, but you can still haggle.

I got screwed over for $300 just to look at the apartment. non refundable deposit. after i flipped a desk in anger, I learned a costly lesson.
