Via is not in all 5 boroughs. Via is 125 th to Battery Park for $5.00. They also have airport rates. Lyft is priced similar to Uber so with Uber flat rates you can really save.... Tiddays!
Uber is getting very expensive. 10 min rides in queens now costing $15+. Lyft was half the price the last time I checked and the pickup time was faster.
I am going to get Via and try that out in Queens. I hear it is the go-to app in Manhattan.

I agree that she should take the subway once to get that experience. But Uber can be beneficial depending on the scenario. For example, if you've never been in the NYC metro system it can be confusing. You might get on the wrong train or think you're on the right train but realize it's an express and it goes right by your stop.
Also, while subway has it's advantages you get dropped off where the subway stops. That could be several blocks or more from where you need to be.
I'd probably avoid Uber during the day because traffic will be worse but at night it will lighten up depending on where you're going. Plus Uber might feel safer than being in a metro area at night. Some of the stations aren't very populated after hours.
No I do not use it enough to utilize a ride pass. I own a car and use it on weekends / weeknights around burroughs outside of Manhattan. Basically uber is only for when I am going drinking.
My boss and his wife have been ranting and raving about Via. They're supposedly Israeli owned which would indicate why they are so popular in Manhattan!

5.00 anywhere from 125st to Battery park in a nice SUV.
When I was in Manhattan it made more sense for me to get a taxi instead of Uber/Lyft. Mainly because taxi cabs is what you see all around you so why try and get a Uber or Lyft when a taxi is available right away?
Subway for me always. Rarely taxi. I would never even think about supporting a disgusting company like Uber. Ever. Nor their corny red-head step sister Lyft.
