I am moving to New York in a few months as a student. I am in process of research which bank is suitable for me. I am looking for a bank that have many ATM banks around the city, and offer good credit deals to students. Thanks you.
The bitter joke in New York, when a storefront is empty, is what's coming in? A bank or a drugstore? Both industries are in real estate wars, opening outlets wherever they can for the sole purpose of keeping it out of the hands of competitors. There is a Duane Reade on the southwest corner of 57th & Broadway, right directly across from the Duane Reade on the southeast corner of 57th & Broadway.
You can't go two blocks without passing a drugstore or a bank in much of Manhattan these days. It's ridiculous, and I don't understand how they can afford it.
My point: you won't have any trouble finding a Chase, Washington Mutual, Commerce, Citibank, Wachovia, NorthFork, etc., etc., etc., when you get here.
Actually, I wonder what happens if you go to Google Maps, locate your school, then ask it to show nearby banks. Hold on . . .
Yes, you can! I just tried it for NYU, but I can't link it.
Good luck in your studies, Filler!

Commerce has an account that reimburses all of your ATM surcharge fees if you maintain a balance of $2500.
NY banks have ridiculously high fees, but you will probably get quite a few student checking offers once you are on "campus." I suggest you look into Electric Orange from ING. You keep your home account and just transfer funds into the online checking account. It pays interest and they have a bazillion ATMs around Manhattan. (They use a certain network, so the ATM you use could be a Chase ATM in a drug store or a generic atm in a mini-mart (what we call bodegas in NYC).
Electric Orange from ING seems like a best one for my needs. What do other New Yorker think about it? Is it a very popular bank in New York? This is my first time hearing Electric Orange so I am a bit hesitant to transfer large sum of money to the bank. Thanks
Well I don't know about the credit deals. If your looking for easier credit, usually credit union's are a little better for that. In terms of sheer ATM's, Chase is the king. They have branches everywhere, and they also have ATM's in duane Reed. There are Duane Reed's all over the city.
In many areas of NYC, there's a Duane-Reade on every other corner.
