Key Food relies on old timers who haven't gotten with the times. Once millennials take over and the old folks die out, I don't see Key Foods lasting. They mark up on things that are dirt cheap elsewhere (especially the GMO things like cereal) and they are especially overpriced for the few GMO free or organic offerings, not to mention their terrible produce. The thing is they tend to be in areas where they are the only show in town, but if people are willing to travel a bit, they can forgo their insane prices and get better quality.
According to someone on the Stuy Town Facebook page, Morton Williams backed out of the deal because they don't want to compete with the future Trader Joe's across the street.
It's always good to have more options. More competition means the existing stores have to step up their game. By the way, Key Food stores vary. I've been to expensive ones and cheaper ones. Ones with bad quality produce and meat, ones with good quality. They also stock their shelves differently depending on the local neighborhood.
