I'm thinking of buying a hybrid to ride around town, mostly for fitness and for fun.

CitiBike is awesome but I want something more for fitness.

Any bike shop recommendations? Has anyone had experience with Danny's Cycles and their 'lifetime service'?

Budget will be $500-600. Looking at the Marin Fairfax SC1 or Trek 7.2. I'm a complete newbie just did some researching today.

And what are the stories on stolen bikes? Are the kypronite "nyc" editions enough?
Any advice appreciated.

I bought a Specialized Sirrus Hybrid about 6 years ago in that same price range. Was looking for the same thing, nothing special but good enough, definitely not department store crap but nothing that would break the bank either. The bike store sales clerk pretty much let me know what was in my price range and what was the most popular for what I was looking for, went to R&A Cycles in Park Slope just because it was closer to me. Make sure to test ride the bikes, the $400 felt to cheap, the 800-900 range bikes felt great but they were to rich for my blood at the time. The 500-600 was just right, it still running great and love it. Will probably just need a tune up this year for the summer. Have a basic U lock with cable, this is more than enough. You can get the big chain locks which is superior but these are heavy to carry, unless I had a 1g bike I wouldn't bother, even the ring locks are fine. But don't leave it overnight on a dark street it will get stolen, the big chain lock may deter them. As for bikes being stolen most are stolen because they leave the bikes with no lock when the owner was not looking.

I had a good experience with Bicycle Habitat. I felt like the guy I was talking to wasn't trying to talk me up and he answered all of my questions. Honestly, you can just read the reviews of different bike shops online and check out a few. Try to go on a day when it won't be too busy (weekends) if you want a lot of individual attention that day.
