That's the point. NYC residents are so dependent on the subway system that if it does go down there is no real alternative. We can't all drive at the same time. And the likelihood of an entire subway system malfunctioning is much greater than every automoble in a city limit malfunctioning. If the subway system is not an efficient and effective means to get people to their workplace, than those workplaces are simply going to move to other cities that can get people to be reliably productive. NYC has to be efficient for it to maintain a competitive advantage. We already know that our political landscape isn't efficient by any measure, we need to make sure that local government inefficiency doesn't bleed into our daily lives. Else we all won't have employment; the liberals goal.
Am in agreement. Expand ferry service and anything else that can move people or whatever.
Ferry service requires living near or getting to ports and the other hassle is not everyone works near the ports.
For the people that do, they can use them, and given the ridership, can tell you most prefer it over the rat-infested subway. Rode subway recently. Entered in car only to see vagabond sprawled out. Experienced mad dash to next car, but luckily, am here to say didn't smell anything.
The infrastructure is old and needs constant repairs. There is no way to replace the infrastructure. The pay scales are higher than the national average and will go higher. Retirements takes a bigger bite of the budget every year. The state is not a unlimited deep pocket. The fed is not a unlimited deep pocket. Raising tolls has gotten out of hand and so has gas taxes. So where do you expect the additional revenue to come from? Sooner rather than later you will either need to deal with a much higher fare, or start paying a fare based on the distance you travel.
Every station should have a public bathroom . if there is a bathroom its beyond disgusting.
And so do gas stations. It doesn't get filthy by itself, people make it filthy. At a few corporations I worked at there was always a sign "Treat this place as you would treat your home". Most did fine, some looked crappy. One corporation had it get so bad with their breakroom that over the weekend the closed it down and converted a small storage room into a two table breakroom with a frig, a sink and a trash can. There are 472 stations in NYC, where would you get the money to cover the payroll to clean these stations 365/24/7?

All of the old subway systems like Boston and Chicago have the same costs and needs..salaries,pensions,old infrastructure, etc yet they manage keep up with maintenance of infrastructure and equipment and provide much cleaner, more reliable service.
Makes you think the real problem is probably poor management and waste due to various types of corruption rather than a lack of income.
The way things seem go in NY I wouldn't be surprised if they raised fares substantially and nothing changed...that the added income would just disappear with no benefit to riders.
I don't understand why NY'ers keep thinking up excuses and reasons for the horrible mess of a system we have . As long as there is this "it's still the best system and we are doing the best we can " mentality nothing will change. It's nowhere near the best...it's disgusting and deplorable and there is no excuse.
Still waiting for someone/anyone to answer my question about what it is that makes it "the best." And 24 hr service...being able to sit in a filthy smelly station for half an hour at 3 am to get service ....doesn't count.
