I'm relatively new to the NYC region. I have to drive A LOT for work as I'm in sales. I have to frequent manhattan often and I know traffic is always a pain in the ass but i know there are just certain areas to definitely avoid. Areas like times square, chinatown, etc. Can someone please elaborate or provide specific sections or stretches of streets or avenues that are a definite must avoid!
Also, what's the deal with street parking? I see these signs that say "3 hour parking commercial vehicles only". So does that mean a non commercial vehicle can park there for more than 3 hours if I keep feeding the meter? or I can't park at all? only commercial vehicles can park and for 3 hours maximum?
What's the best way to get a deal on parking, last time I had to park for 2 hours in a structure and it cost 65 dollars...insane. I can't keep doing that.
Avoid the westside by the tunnel entrances. Driving crosstown during rush hour isn't much fun either. Really just avoid anywhere there might be traffic. This means always check google maps before going anywhere. If red (especially dark red) drive around it using sidestreets.
Don't park on commercial only parking during the hours specified if you do not have a commercial vehicle.
Look for early bird parking rates at garages. Can find as low as $20 closer to the rivers. There is an app to help you find them.
And there aren't very many gas stations on Manhattan.

Thank you! I did just notice there aren't many gas stations in manhattan...I never realized it until you just mentioned it.
thanks for the clarification on the commercial vehicle parking as well.
The parking rates are ridiculous...even for an early bird it's expensive because i have a full size SUV.
