Seriously what is with all the complaints about the subway lately?
The subway is fine.
You get to go anywhere in the 5 boros 24/7 for $2.75. During rush hours most trains come every 5 minutes, they are working to upgrade the system with better time tracking, it's much cleaner than it used to be, what else do you want?
You don't like it, move to a place you have to drive to work everyday and sit in traffic.
As someone who hasn't worked days in I don't know how many years, I would like twenty-four hour service. It would be nicer if trains and buses after 11 PM would attempt to run on a halfway decent schedule.
My commute attempting to come home at midnight lately is already crappy enough. The buses where I live already suck so I cannot imagine extending service on them making it any better.
I've traveled extensively on two systems in the U.S. that don't have 24/7 service, San Francisco BART and DC Metro. Both are newer systems and both are STILL plagued with delays, overcrowding, equipment failures, and other problems. (That's in addition to not being able to get around late at night.) They're closed because there are no third tracks and that's supposed to be the time for fixing things up. Well, you can clean platforms easier with nobody there, but the real problems are whether track, cars, signals, and equipment are up to date and in good repair. If those things aren't tended to, the system will suck, whether it sucks 18 hours a day or 24 hours a day.
if it was only shutdown at late late night on weeknights, then you can run additional express buses with signal priority which can essentially give you the same service speeds as it won't contend with traffic and at that point the lower capacity of buses aren't an issue as these trains are never filled at these times. Just having three hours for basic maintenance and cleaning every weeknight would make a world of difference.
I would like to trade the 7/24 MTA service to stop the perpetual working progress near two metro stations, 86th street at Yorkville and at Houston street.

I agree.
What other US city's public transit even comes close?
